A large crowd of eager casino-goers gathered in the rain on May 1 to officially open the new St. Croix Casino Hertel and Hertel Express on the morning of May 1. If you were there, thank you for your enthusiasm, support – and bravery in the face of a very cold, wet May Day. If you weren’t there, we look forward to seeing you soon.
Dignitaries in attendance for the ribbon-cutting were the St. Croix Tribal Council, National Indian Gaming Association Chairman (NIGA) Ernest Stevens, Executive Director of the Midwest Alliance of Sovereign Tribes (MAST) Scott Vele, Burnett County Board Chairman Donald Taylor, St. Croix Casinos CEO Leva Oustigoff Jr. , members of the construction team and casino marketing staff.
Michael Decorah, St. Croix tribal inter-governmental affairs representative, emceed the event that included an opening prayer by Tribal Chairman Lewis Taylor, an honor song by the host drum for the event, the presentation of the eagle staff and colors by members of the St. Croix AMVETS post and remarks by Chairman Taylor and St. Croix Casinos’ CEO Leva Oustigoff Jr.
St. Croix Tribal Vice Chairman Crystal Peterson performed the actual ribbon cutting accompanied by Chairman Taylor.
But the focus of the day was on the new casino. The new St. Croix Casino Hertel houses 250 slots and Gatherings, a 50-seat restaurant. As soon as the doors opened, the slots and the restaurant were busy. They were still busy when I left to return to Turtle Lake two hours later after having lunch at Gatherings. If you’re interested in a great meal at a reasonable price, try Gatherings. You’ll leave full and happy. I personally plan on going back soon to try some of the weekly specials. If you’re hungry for meat and potatoes, I can personally recommend the hot beef sandwich. Yum!
Along with the casino and restaurant, the new casino complex includes a beautifully appointed convenience store offering low gas prices, fresh sandwiches and a full line of grocery items.
Truckers will enjoy the casino complex’s truckers’ suite providing lounge-type seating, WiFi, toilets with showers and free laundry facilities and the diesel truckers’ fill area with additional parking for truckers.
If you’re looking for discounted prices on cigarettes and other tobacco products, stop by the St. Croix Smoke Shop, which features a drive-up window and walk-in humidor.
More amenities are on the way. An RV Park is scheduled to open May 27. Later in the summer, a registration/clubhouse will open, offering games, a sitting area and toilets with shower facilities.
And an adjacent amphitheater is opening on May 26. Join us at 5pm May 26 for the inaugural concert featuring the Arch Allies with opening acts Chris Kroeze and Paisan & the Family Brass. Fireworks will follow the show. Admission is free. And there’s plenty of seating. The amphitheater seats 850, and there’s additional seating on the grass adjacent to the amphitheater.
The new St. Croix Casino Hertel is open and ready to win you over. Stop in to see us soon. We’re located just east of the former St. Croix Casino Hertel Expresss on State Highway 70 two miles west of Hertel. You can’t miss our big outdoor sign.
